ADCRC Awards Contract to 5AM Solutions

Supports launching web-based clinical research in Arizona for international collaboration

PHOENIX, January 19, 2005—5AM Solutions, a provider of web solutions for the life sciences, today announced the award of a three year contract totaling $300,000 from the Arizona Disease Control Research Commission (ADCRC). The contract will help fund research and further development of the System for Collaborative Translational Research (SCTR), including the integration of components from the Microarray Enterprise Manager (MEM) – both web-based applications built by the founders that support on demand clinical research. Research collaboration, a key national priority, is difficult to organize and execute. SCTR will improve Arizona researcher’s capacity to work together and with collaborators around the world.

SCTR allows large scale clinical studies to be performed by researchers anywhere in the world, protects patient privacy and ensures the quality of research data. Through the web, SCTR dramatically increases the number of patients that can participate in a study, eases the administrative and infrastructure burdens on participating institutions and feeds the research need for capturing enough data to achieve statistical significance for validating a discovery. MEM manages all aspects of gene expression profiling – from the laboratory workflow to data annotation, standardization, and publication.

Together, these applications serve researchers across the disparities of geography, clinical and research disciplines and information technology platforms. They allow investigators to directly organize and link the collection of quality data by the appropriate experts—the key problem in understanding disease, developing therapies and improving patient health. Simultaneously, SCTR protects patient privacy by restricting access to data (through “roles”) at the most discrete levels. SCTR provides answers to questions that are on the minds of researchers but rarely at their fingertips.

The initial uses of SCTR in Arizona will support two simultaneous studies: an Alzheimer’s Disease study driven by the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), and an Autism study, driven the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center (SARRC). As part of the contract, 5AM will port the SCTR application to an IBM environment, enhance the software to meet the needs of its Arizona user base, and provide access as an on-demand service available through www.5amsolutions.com. 5AM is seeking other early adopters within Arizona who might benefit from the use of SCTR.

Co-investigator Dr. Dietrich Stephan, Director of Neurogenomics at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), will provide scientific guidance and has contributed substantial expertise to both applications. TGen will also provide bioinformatics support. Hosting and data backup will be performed by Sterling Network Services, LLC – the premier data center provider in the Southwest United States.
