Brent Gendleman brings a widely diverse background
to 5AM. Engaged in all aspects of Software Engineering, though concentrating
on Project and Product Management, Requirements elicitation and
User Interface Design, Gendleman led the development of the Microarray
Enterprise Manger and its implementation for the NIH Neuroscience
Microarray Consortium (http://arrayconsortium.tgen.org)
- the first of the NIH Neuroscience Blueprint applications. Additional
leadership was provided to Wolters Kluwer Health Informatics and
Acxiom to support the transition from the mainframe world to the
web and most recently is leading the team at the National Cancer
Institute's Center for Bioinformatics.
Prior to forming 5AM, Gendleman was a Practice
Manager for Number Six Software (Reston, VA), Gendleman built and
led a 10 person software development team that produced 6-10 production
quality web systems each year. He served life science clients such
as the National Cancer Institute, the Hospital for Special Surgery
(NYC) and the Children’s National Medical Center (DC) in addition
to significant contracts with the U.S. Air Force and the Bureau
of Labor Statistics. Prior to Number Six, he spent two years performing
international aid work in Germany and Yugoslavia, was a consultant
with a subsidiary of SRA developing web solutions for the Environmental
Protection Agency, and holds five years of publishing experience
at the standard for weekly scientific publishing, Science Magazine.
Gendleman has over 10 years of serving customers by listening to
and articulating their needs.
He earned a Bachelor of Science from Syracuse
University in Television, Radio and Film Writing and a Web Development
Certificate from George Washington University
Susan Mason
Chief Operations Officer
Susan Mason has more than 16 years of experience in the information
technology industry, including more than 11 years of Finance and Contracts
experience. She has been working within the Federal Government arena
for more than 18 years. Her strong finance, contracts, customer support,
and information technology background helps her to work effectively
with our clients.
Prior to joining 5AM, Mason spent nearly nine years with Number Six
Software most recently as the Vice President of Finance and Administration.
She was the primary point of contact for contracts totaling more than
$13 million annually in sales. Having participated in the growth of
a company whose annual revenue was less than $1 million in sales when
she started with the company in 1994, Mason knows what it takes to
make a company successful. Ms. Mason also spent 8 years at EDS as
a Business Manager working on, among other things, winning proposals
worth more than $200 million.
Mason holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science with a
minor concentration in Economics from Trinity College as well as a
Masters Certificate in Government Contracts from George Washington
University and ESI International
Joe Croghan
Vice President of Client Services
Joe Croghan has over 20 years of experience in technology development and
management. As 5AM's Vice President of Client Services he manages client
relationships and is responsible for 5AM's business development.
Prior to joining 5AM, Croghan was the Vice President of Client
Operations at Cysive, Inc., a technology company specializing in internet
infrastructure and web application development, where he
partnerships and client operations, helping the company grow from a
small boutique consulting firm, to a publically traded national presence.
Croghan was a Senior Scientist at LGA, Inc., a
government contractor specializing in technical analysis and system
development. He has a background in both software and technology development and
management, and ran the PriceWaterhouse Artificial Intelligence (AI) and
Object Oriented Programming Group, as well as Booz-Allen's Artificial
Intelligence Lab in the corporate Systems Resource Center.Croghan was also a founding partner in Snowbird Capital.
Croghan has a Bachelors of Science in Systems Engineering from the University of
Virginia with a Concentration in Management Information System, and a Master's of Science in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia
with a Concentration in Operations Research. He is a member of the George
Washington University Council of Entrepreneurial Tech Transfer &
Commercialization (CET2C), the University of Virginia T100 Alumni Mentoring
Program, and The Northern Virginia Technology Council's BioMedTech
Committee.
Bill Mason
Chief Human Development Officer
Bill Mason has more than 20 years of software engineering experience,
specializing in the design and development of web based applications.
A Rational certified instructor for Object Oriented Analysis and
design; in-depth knowledge of the Rational Unified Process (RUP),
Mason has the proven background to guide customers and development
teams to achieve superior results. Mason recently worked with Duke
University to design and develop a Translational research application
which brings together disparate cancer databases thru the use of
web services technology. This application, which will be used by
thousands of physicians,will bring the science of cancer research
to local physicians to help better predict patient outcomes.
Prior to his position in 5AM, Mason spent 8 years with Number Six
Software. His excellent leadership and commitment to quality was
a significant contributor to grow the company from 6 to over 70
employees. Mason always developed great customer satisfaction which
leads to the growth and strength of the company.
Mason holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Georgia
State University.
Rob Daly
Chairman and
Chief Technology Officer (Acting)
Rob Daly has over 22 years experience in applied software engineering,
using a combination of leading processes and tools and a commitment to serve his
customers. In 2003, Daly sold his majority interest in Number Six Software, Inc.,
a Washington, DC area software engineering firm he co-founded in 1994. Following
the sale of Number Six, Daly co-founded and serves as Chairman of 5AM Solutions.
Daly is also currently CTO (acting) of 5AM. In this role, his primary focus is
defining and institutionalizing the "5AM Way" to employ and increase
the value of technology, including tools, processes, and talent.
As Number Six’s President, Daly led and organically grew it into a
50+ person company with annual revenues exceeding $7.3M in 2002. While Daly was at Number Six,
all growth was through revenue, not capital investment, and Number Six was "in the black"
every quarter since its inception. Though now more often engaged in leadership and
management roles, Daly is an acknowledged expert in object technology; his most
recent highlight being a contributor on UML 2 Toolkit,
published by Wiley and Sons. He was pleased and proud to be acknowledged as an influence
and reviewer for the Jolt Award-winningContinuous Integration:
Improving Software Quality and Reducing Risk, by Paul Duvall, Steve Matyas, and Andy Glover.
Even more ancient history for Daly includes being a software specialist with Rational Software Corporation.
Daly holds a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University,
and various professional certifications in, among others, object-oriented and Java technology.
Steve Matyas
Chief Information Officer
Steve Matyas brings a variety
of applied software engineering experience with both commercial and
government clients. He is a co-author of a
Addison-Wesley Professional series text, the Jolt Award-winningContinuous Integration:
Improving Software Quality and Reducing Risk, a contributing
author of UML 2 Toolkit a J. Wiley & Sons publication
and an instructor of Java Web Development.
Matyas was a lead engineer on the team that built the initial release
of the Microarray Enterprise Manager. He is a practitioner of both
eXtreme Programming (XP) and the Rational Unified Process (RUP). Much
of his professional hands-on experience has been in the Java/J2EE
custom software development and services industry with a specialization
in methodologies, object technology, and process improvement.
Prior to 5AM, Matyas has performed a wide variety of roles from business
analyst, project manager to developer, designer, and architect. He
has served such varied clients as Time Warner/AOL, National Cancer
Institute, EDS, U.S. Department of Defense, and Children’s National
Medical Center (DC). Matyas holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer
Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University
(Virginia Tech) and holds a variety of professional certifications
in object-oriented, process and Java technology.
Leslie Power
Chief Communication Officer
Leslie Power brings 15 years of experience in project management,
software architecture, usability and interface design, and object-oriented
analysis, design, and programming to her role as lead engineer communicating the company's message.
An experienced web application developer certified in the Rational
Unified Process, she is comfortable in most roles within the software
development process, combining her technical and communicative abilities
with curiosity, persistence, open ears, humor, and excellent project
and people management skills.
A serial entrepeneur, Leslie founded Digital Addiction, serving
as Vice President for the start up internet gaming company and a
lead developer for their flagship product, Santcum, an online collectible
card game as well as Dream Deck Baseball 2001, built for Electronic
Arts. An avocational fiction writer, she also was the Director of Marketing
for the National Center for Nonprofit Boards (now Boardsource).
Power holds a Bachelor of Arts from Haverford College and graudated
with Phi Beta Kappa honors.
