5AM is proud to underwrite the scholarship program for advocates participating in the Genetic Alliance Newborn Screening Summit on December 7th and 8th in Bethesda, Maryland. Stakeholders meet to engage about a vision for the future of newborn screening. Our sponsorship enables Summit attendance by newborn screening advocates who would otherwise be unable to participate. The voice of advocates who represent the families most affected by newborn screening is critical to this process. 5AM will be in attendance; contact us at
info@5amsolutions.com if you'd like to meet.

Web Portal Provides Researchers and Clinicians a Forum to Further Encourage Collection and Use of Family Health History Data

Announcement
NCI announced the release of version 1.0 of the caIntegrator2 platform which allows researchers to create custom translational study web portals for data query and analysis. These custom portals support the integration of clinical, microarray, and medical imaging data for querying, analysis and visualization, thus enabling multidisciplinary research. This first release of caIntegrator2 supports the integration and analysis of clinical data with expression data and copy number data from caArray (Affymetrix and Agilent platforms) and with images from the National Biomedical Imaging Archive (NBIA). In addition, data can be queried and analyzed via caGrid analytic services (Comparative Marker Selection, Principal Component Analysis and GISTIC at the time of this release) or via
GenePattern. Analysis results can then be either viewed at GenePattern or downloaded from the caIntegrator2 portal.
The NCI CBIIT deployment of the application can be accessed at
https://caintegrator2.nci.nih.gov/caintegrator2/login.action and requires users to register for an account to access the study data that exists there. Public data from three studies are currently hosted in this portal: The Cancer Genome Atlas Glioblastoma Multiforme (TCGA GBM) study; the Director's Challenge Lung Study; and the REpository for Molecular BRAin Neoplasia DaTa (REMBRANDT), an informatics project to support the GMDI effort led by the NCI's Center for Cancer Research (CCR) Neuro-Oncology Branch. In the coming weeks, we will also make available the public data from Therapeutically Applicable Research to Generate Effective Treatments (TARGET) Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) study and TCGA Ovarian study at this portal. Please contact us if you would like to host your data at the CBIIT instance as well. This work describes a method to streamline mass spectrometry analysis of proteins by using computational methods. The method uses computational prediction of peptide sequences to replace the time-consuming and expensive MS/MS step that is commonly used.

Abstract: At a health policy forum in today's Mid-Atlantic Bio conference, Rep. Charles Boustany (R-La.) prodded biotech leaders to lobby Congress for support on biotech innovation programs such as SBIRs (Small Business Innovation Research grants).
5AM's CEO Brent Gendleman challenged Boustany to introduce a bill focused exclusively on biotech innovation. "Is there a reason not to just say 'R&D is important to the future of the country, and we understand that we need to make incremental improvements, and we need to do that now,' regardless of political affiliation?"
Reminding the audience that he's just one (Congress)man, Boustany then stated that he would be willing to do so "with you guys if you give me a little help."
"We can do that right now." Gendleman replied, to the cheers of the crowd of biotech leaders.
As innovators in our field, we're always ready to roll up our sleeves and get work done. Will SBIRs be saved? Will a biotech innovation bill hit the House floor? Stay tuned...

Abstract: Dr. Francis S. Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, mentions the Family Health History software in his article in Parade. "Bob, a patient I've worked with, was only 32 when he was diagnosed with colon cancer. Upon sharing the news with his family, he learned that several relatives also had colon cancer, including his great-grandmother, his grandmother, and two of his grandmother's siblings. But what did Bob's family history mean? And who else might be at risk?"

Abstract: The Family Health History application, which 5AM developed for the US Surgeon General, was mentioned in a Woman's Day magazine article, "What Doctors Wish You'd Do." Tracking your family health history can help your doctor understand your risk of certain diseases, and prescribe lifestyle changes and screening tests to improve your health.

5AM's Will FitzHugh Co-Authors Posters and Presentation at AACR Meeting
Will FitzHugh, 5AM's Senior Director of Bioinformatics, is co-author on two posters and a presentation at this year's American Association of Cancer Research meeting in Denver, Colorado. The posters and the presentation describe work in identifying and validating serum biomarker panels for early detection and diagnosis of lung, colorectal and pancreatic cancer. The work leverages Celera's mass spectrometry-based discovery platform and uses ELISA immunoassays to directly measure concentrations of proteins in the serum from cancer patients. Mr. FitzHugh performed the statistical analysis and produced predictive models for identifying serum from patients with disease.
